Smart Marketing Strategy Blog Post Generates National News
Jean Gianfagna’s Smart Marketing Strategy blog post on the deluge of political advertising in Ohio led to an extraordinary turn for Jean and her blog in the national media spotlight.
Jean’s post on September 17, 2012, “Welcome to Ohio, The Eye of the Political Advertising Storm,” profiled the massive volume of advertising targeting voters in swing states during the 2012 presidential election. The blog noted the huge amount of direct mail flooding the mailboxes of Ohio voters and questioned whether this investment was a smart marketing strategy.
When the Associated Press began researching a story on this topic, they found Jean’s blog in a web search and the direct mail reference caught their attention. Reporter Brian Bakst called to interview Jean and sent a photographer to her Cleveland, Ohio home to shoot her picture with examples of the political direct mail she had received.
On October 20, Jean was featured in an AP story, “Enough Already: Voters Hit with Ads, Calls, More,” by Nancy Benac and Philip Elliott. The story and Jean’s photo ran nationally on the AP newswire and appeared on the websites of the Seattle Times, Dallas Morning News, Charlotte News Observer, New Jersey Herald, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Wichita Eagle (Kansas.com), Yahoo!News, Google News, the Huffington Post, DailyCaller.com, Newser.com, MarketNewsFlash.com, FederalNewsRadio.com, and MetroNews.ca, among many others.
A week later, Jean was quoted in another AP story written by Brian Bakst, this one focused on political direct mail in swing states. Jean’s photo again was used to illustrate the story and her picture and quote appeared on websites and in print newspapers across the nation. Here’s the story as it ran on Salon.com.
But her moment in the media sun wasn’t over yet! CBS News saw the AP story and called to interview Jean for a news story that ran nationally on October 24 on CBS Radio News: Here’s the interview.
Then, the local CBS affiliate in Cleveland, Ohio, 19 Action News, sent reporter Tiffany Tucker to Jean’s home to interview her for a TV story on the subject. Jean appeared on the evening newscasts in Cleveland on October 26, 2012.
One outcome of this adventure was the opportunity to write another Smart Marketing Strategy blog post: “When a Blog Post Leads to Sudden Fame: 5 Tips for Marketers.”
Another high point was being featured in the AP story in the Toledo Blade, the newspaper of Jean’s home town, Toledo, Ohio.

Direct mail marketing among Ms. Gianfagna’s business-to-business clients is down and those who do it are substantially more targeted in the mailings than in the past.
